In London 1854. George Campbell and John Challis lured men into a fancy ball dressed to the nines as women. They were arrested on the intent to commit an unnatural offence. One of the men was claimed to be a preacher and on mission of research, the other claimed poor health. The charges were dropped.
During the age of petticoats and layers of crinolines, this was not the only case of such drag balls. High society men and even royalty were known to dress up as woman and woman dressed as men for a night of fun and mischief.
My grandmother worn a locket with a watch around her neck and I always admired it. In the 1800’s women often pinned a watch to their bosom or dangled it on a chain.
Did you know the wristwatch became popular with the bicycling fad (or Dandy Horse- as the bicycling was known early on as). I suppose it was difficult to ride a bicycle with a watch dangling around your neck.
